Researchers Turn to Turfgrass Instead of Chemicals to Deter Pests

چکیده

Each turfgrass species and cultivar has particular optimal growth requirements. Water, fertility and mowing height differ. Similarly, insect pest management needs vary with grass type. As chemical pest management tools become less available, researchers at the University of Georgia are seeking alternative methods in the management of common turfgrass pests. Their foundation management strategy, they stress, should always be to deploy pest-resistant plants. Why spend time and money fighting a pest problem when it can be simply avoided with plants that are less susceptible? It is important to keep in mind, however, that sustainable systems always use multiple tactics for pest suppression. In other words, we don't want to simply replace chemical control with highly pest-resistant plants. That approach simply increases selection pressure for pests to overcome the pest resistance provided by the plant material and become "resistant to the resistance." Research at the University of Georgia is seeking to develop strategies that complement or better yet synergize one another, believing that this approach makes more economic (and environmental) sense.

Detection of White Grub Damage in Turfgrass Using Remote Sensing

Rationale White grubs (e.g. larvae of Japanese beetles or masked chafers) are the most destructive and economically injurious pests of turfgrasses in the Midwest and eastern United States. Developing grubs feed on turfgrass roots at the soil/thatch interface or in the first few centimeters of soil. Visual evidence of an infestation includes thinning, wilting in the presence of adequate irrigati...

BIOLOGICAL CONTROL Influence of Commercially Available Wildflower Mixes on Beneficial Arthropod Abundance and Predation in Turfgrass

Conservation and augmentation of indigenous natural enemies are promising strategies for biologically based pest management in outdoor urban environments. This research sought to determine whether the addition of wildßower plantings would enhance the occurrence, abundance and impact of beneÞcial arthropods in the landscape, and to determine the potential compatibility of pest-resistant turfgras...

Influence of fungicides on the curative and preventive suppression of select diseases of golf course putting greens, 2009-2010

Golf course putting greens may be affected by various turfgrass pests. Fungicide applications are often necessary on either a preventive or curative basis and may target more than one disease. The initial objective of this trial was to assess the ability of various fungicides to provide curative suppression of Type II fairy ring symptoms on a creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera) putting gr...

Determination of Crop Water Stress Index for Irrigation Scheduling of Turfgrass (Cynodon dactylon L. Pers.) under Drought Conditions

Abstract The crop water stress index (CWSI) is a valuable tool for monitoring and quantifying water stress as well as for irrigation scheduling. A field experiment was conducted during spring and summer 2012 at Research Station of College of Agriculture and Natural Resources of Darab, Shiraz University, Iran, to determine CWSI of  turfgrass for irrigation scheduling. Four levels of water regime...
